Our break-out session at the 2015 Sustainability Communications Forum aimed to inspire attendees to create sustainability communications with real impact.

Ask questions first, shoot later

With a room full of sustainability, communications and corporate affairs professionals from a wide range of industry sectors, the Sustainability Communications Forum, held in London in May 2015, provided the perfect speaking opportunity for Flag. Sima Varsani, head of account direction, and Lauren Burke, senior account director, hosted a break-out session entitled ‘Does your message resonate and have impact?’.

They began by focusing on how to develop an effective communications strategy, and suggested some key questions to ask before you start communicating, such as ‘Are you talking to the right people?’ and ‘Have you considered what your audience wants?’. Real-life examples gave our audience food for thought on how such questions might help them to address their own communications challenges.

Getting the right mix

After examining how a creative, visual approach can bring a story to life, capture attention and break down complex information, our presenters were joined by Charlie Scallon, head of sustainability at Veolia UK & Ireland. She presented a case study about our work with Veolia, talking through their communications challenges and how we have worked together to help stakeholders understand Veolia’s innovative ‘Resourcing the world’ strategy.

Charlie also outlined the importance of using the right tools to complement a report, highlighting the mix of channels – an animation, an employee engagement programme, a highlights wall, social media infographics and a summary report ‘storybook’ – that we have produced together.
